Local association files, around 1884-1970

 Series
Identifier: 3

Scope and Contents

Files recording interactions between the National Association and Community Associations and Registered Groups and inquiries re forming new assns. (Student Associations are not included.) Due to time constraints, this list was not extensively edited and is much the same as the list included in the 1978 "Inventory to the Records Files Collection of the National Board of the Young Women's Christian Association" prepared by Louisa Bowen.

Local Associations files are in order by state and then usually by location (city or town) of the Association. Microfilmed records about each Association are listed in alphabetical order, though they may not have been filmed precisely in that order. There is often a "Miscellaneous" section as first thing filmed for each state.

The local association series is in 3 parts, representing the three batches of filming: 3a contains materials dating from 1884-1950 (reels 161-222), 3b contains materials dated from 1951-60 (reels 253-277), 3c contains materials dated from 1961-70 (reels 281, 323-345). Each batch is arranged alphabetically by state and then alphabetically by location of the Association.

Reel 169, which contained the pre-1950 records of some Florida Associations (Gainesville-West Palm Beach) and Georgia Associations (Albany-Brunswick) was lost.

Conditions Governing Access

From the Record Group: This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.

However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.

Conditions Governing Access

From the Record Group: Until we move into New Neilson in early 2021, collections are stored in multiple locations and may take up to 48 hours to retrieve. Researchers are strongly encouraged to contact Special Collections (specialcollections@smith.edu) at least a week in advance of any planned visits so that boxes may be retrieved for them in a timely manner.
