Scope and Contents

The Overseas Committee of the War Work Council of the National Board of the YWCA of the U.S.A. is responsible for the oversight of war relief overseas being conducted through or supported by the YWCA of the U.S.A. Reports from the committee provide an overview of their services and activities for the reporting period including an assessment of the social, economic, health and safety conditions in the countries where work is being conducted. Reports of from secretaries working in Belgium and Czechoslovakia are a first hand account of the YWCA of the U.S.A. activities and the conditions faced by women there. The secretaries report on association work, social conditions, facility and support needs and the social and political context the women are living in.

This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.

However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
