Scope and Contents
Correspondence with and reports from YWCA of the U.S.A. staff in China. The YWCA of the U.S.A. has a long history of cooperation with the YWCA of China. Secretaries are sent on shorter visits to assess programming and associations or longer terms to serve as leaders and trainers and to establish or develop programming and associations. Correspondence and reports from the American secretaries provide accounts of their travel and descriptions of conditions in addition to summarizing work their work with women and girls in China. Narrative reports and correspondence provide insight into the lives of the women working in China and carrying out the mission of the YWCA.

This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.
However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
