Scope and Contents

Documents concerning the development and programs of young women's Christian associations in Russia. Beginning with centers for industrial employed women in Russia, the YWCA of the U.S.A. supports the establishment of YWCA associations in Russia financially as well as by sending staff to serve as advisors, trainers and leaders. Expanding from work with employed women in business and industry, YWCA activities in Russia include service to students, rural women and young girls and also include relief efforts for those affected by World War I and World War II. Because activities are supported by the YWCA of the U.S.A., secretaries in Russia send reports and correspondence to the United States in order to account for resources, arrange travel, give narrative accounts of the activities and impressions of the secretaries and assess future needs, opportunities and challenges. Descriptions in these reports include impressions of the people, the political climate, the government and the country. Background information including information on folklore and descriptions of the communist government are provided to give context to the work being done at the YWCA centers.
