Scope and Contents

Correspondence and reports from YWCA staff in South America. The YWCA of the U.S.A. supports YWCA associations in South America by sending American women to to fill leadership positions, act as advisors, report on work to the United States and assess the status of the YWCA associations in South America and its service to the women. In addition, arrangements are made for South American women to visit the United States and exchange ideas and resources with secretaries of the YWCA of the U.S.A. Reports and correspondence contain narrative accounts of the association work, analysis of the needs of the women of South America, descriptions of the nature of the YWCA work and challenges faced by the associations. Documents are arranged alphabetically by reporter's last name covering last names beginning with the letters P through R.

This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.

However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
