World's YWCA, 1931-1951
Scope and Contents
Documents concerning the conferences of the World YWCA World Council. International conferences of the legislative body of the World YWCA meet periodically to unite under a shared vision and purpose, discuss and agree on positions of political and social action, hear updates from YWCA associations, discuss the relationships within the World YWCA and discuss the role of Christianity and religion in the organization and as it concerns women globally. As the first World Council conference since the beginning of World War II, discussion and conference actions concern the war relief efforts, the current global political climate, the refugee situations, the role of women and Christianity in world politics and social action. Proceedings, minutes follow the convention actions, addresses and discussion sessions. Preparatory materials distributed prior to the conference contain articles and discussion guides related to topics that will be discussed at convention. A leadership program in held at Mont Pelerin to discuss the meaning and purpose the the worldwide Christian movement and the role of women in the church. As early as 1931, having an international conference in China is discussed within the World Council of the World YWCA. Considerations include the political situation between China and Japan and the financial burden of hosting a conference. Other materials include reports on the YWCA movement in China and the status of Christianity in China.

This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.
However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
