Immigration, 1940-1950
Scope and Contents
Documents concerning immigration issues and the YWCA of the U.S.A. including immigrant registration, "enemy aliens", Asian immigrants and Asian Americans, cooperation with other organizations, and displaced persons. Alien registration documents include a manual from the National Refugee Service, Inc. regarding regulations applying to emigres of "enemy" nations during World War II. Enemy aliens materials address regulations and policies affecting people of German, Japanese, and Italian nationalities, and include the "Notice to aliens of enemy nationalities" by the United States Department of Justice regarding certification of identification. Other documents include memorandums from the YWCA National Board to associations regarding these policies, a report on the German American Bund, and reports on immigration. The YWCA of the U.S.A. Committee on Orientals materials document the YWCA's efforts to repeal the Chinese Exclusion Act. Cooperation materials include minutes, reports, and communication regarding the American Civil Liberties Union Committee on Alien Civil Rights and demonstrate the efforts made on behalf on immigrants and discuss legislation related to the efforts. Also included are materials from the American Committee for Protection of Foreign Born, the Good Neighbor Committee, and other cooperative organizations. Displaced Persons materials discuss the combined effort of the YWCA with the YMCA to aid wartime refugees and includes reports, budgets, and statistics from the World YWCA and World YMCA.

Conditions Governing Access
This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.
However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
