Scope and Contents

Documents concerning international institutes, YWCA of the U.S.A. associations for immigrant women including materials on adult education programs and the American Federation of International Institutes. Adult education materials include citizenship training, social program availability, English language coaching, home life adjustments, preserving cultural heritage, discussions of social and cultural differences, and other topics aimed at helping women new to the United States adjust to living in a new country. Adult education materials also include research and statistics related to the needs of non-native women and girls concerning education. American Federation of International Institutes subject files concern how the organization works with the YWCA and includes organizational background and structure, convention proceedings, statements of principles, lists of institutions, and documents discussion United States law and policy regarding immigrants.

This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.

However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
