Scope and Contents

Documents concerning YWCA of the U.S.A. Industrial Department, it's council rules of procedure, U-day and victory program. Rules of procedure materials are comprised of correspondence and drafts of procedure concerning the operation of the industrial council. U-day materials concern a YWCA industrial council initiative to educate women on the function of unions and to strengthen women's participation in unions. Materials may suggest activities for U-day, provide resources for education, summarize lectures and talks, and discuss current issues regarding unionization. The victory program materials concern industrial women war workers, fair employment for all, continuation of employment after the war (World War II), working conditions faced by women, and work towards winning the war. Miscellaneous industrial council materials may include, handbooks, organizational structures, bulletins on industrial council resolution, correspondence regarding council business, studies, and other materials.

This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.

However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
