Scope and Contents

Documents concerning the YWCA of the U.S.A. Industrial Department. National industrial council lists include of listings of council committee members, officers, project leaders, regional representatives, and other members. Organization materials document the regional, territorial, and national structure of the industrial council. Project materials concern initiatives, activities, and campaigns led by the industrial council. These letters and documents provide instruction on how to run and promote projects at local associations, make suggestions for contacting political leaders, suggest reading and educational materials, and communicate the needs and goals of the projects. Projects may include the Citizens' Action Campaign, workplace equality, working conditions, social welfare, workers' health, international aid including China and the "Far East", and other matters. The industrial girl's creed addresses the role of religion, self, others, and her job. In the group consciousness subject file course materials, letters, pamphlets, and other documents outline and discuss the matter of belonging to a group and how organization and belonging help to address issues faced by workers. Materials on the hearing on women workers include a transcript of questions with Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, preparatory materials for panel discussions, lists of participants, selection guidelines for YWCA industrial girls, notes on issues faced by industrial women, and preparatory materials for a panel discussion with Eleanor Roosevelt. History documents summarize the formation and growth of the industrial work including issues faced by workers. Finally, married women in industry materials address unique problems faced by those women, provides data regarding these women, and discuss the changing role of women workers.

This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.

However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
