Scope and Contents

Minutes, reports and discussion notes concerning efforts to educate student associations on issues of race and encourage inclusive associations throughout the National Student YWCA. Interracial education committees, as part of the National Student Y.W.C.A. and the National Intercollegiate Christian Council, advise local associations through correspondence, provide materials and make advisory visits. Committee minutes and reports of YWCA of the U.S.A. Interracial Education Secretaries provide summaries of and assess the current interacial work being done on campuses and throughout the United States. Educational materials include recommendations from student conferences and outlines and excerpts of materials available from Womans Press. Regional reports and correspondence concern the status of racism and race relations in student groups by region and include some examples of work being done on college campuses. Discussion group notes from summer student conferences provide insight into the perspective of the college student concerning race relations and racism.

This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.

However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
