Scope and Contents

Documents concerning efforts to educate student associations on issues of race and encourage inclusive associations in the student associations of the YWCA of the U.S.A. Commissions and committees of the National Student Y.W.C.A and the National Intercollegiate Christian Council advise local associations and regional contacts on matters of inclusivity and race relations, provide materials for education and reference and organize efforts to create an inclusive student program. In addition to minutes and reports, documents include correspondence and pamphlets concerning efforts to support and advocate for anti-lynching legislation. Included are letters and telegrams to President Roosevelt and legislators. Following Juliette Derricote's visit to India a "Pilgrimage of Friendship" is arranged at the request of Indian student associations where a delegation of African American members of YMCA and YWCA student associations are sent to India, Burma and Ceylon to visit student associations and share information regarding their culture and experiences. Narrative reports describe the visits and experiences of the delegates and report on the culture and status of the student they visited. Following records of the delegation to India are issues of "Interracial News Bulletin, a bulletin published to keep members informed of national and international news affecting minority groups covering such topics as the treatment of Jewish people in Europe, social and economic conditions of African Americans in the United States, suggestions for inclusive programing and regional updates.
