Scope and Contents

Documents concerning the work of the United Service Organizations (USO) during World War II including the YWCA of the U.S.A.'s USO program. The USO and student Christian associations provide services on college campuses to assist those affected by the war. Services include recreation, leadership training, summer work projects and volunteer opportunities. Documents include a detailed history and report of student services of the USO division of the National Board of the YWCA, assessment of college enrollment statistics, notes of a consultation meeting regarding service men returning to college campuses, articles concerning the campus work of the USO and leadership reports and notes. Also included is a certificate of commendation from the War Department and the Navy Department for the service of the USO to the war effort.

This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.

However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
