Scope and Contents

Documents concerning YWCA of the U.S.A. program of activities and fundraising for the 1955 centennial anniversary of the beginning of the YWCA movement worldwide. The Centennial Observance and Celebration includes a fundraiser and celebration of Young Women's Christian associations with the aims of increasing membership, community engagement and support. Documents include planning materials and programs for the inaugural luncheon, correspondence concerning the Congress of Industrial Organizations' (CIO's) endorsement of the Centennial Fund, meeting minutes concerning centennial planning activities, membership development correspondence and reports, a memorandum of understanding with the International Film Foundation to produce a film about the YWCA of the U.S.A., a copy of the centennial song and additional songs to be used in celebrations and a report of opinion polls sent to local associations concerning the celebrations.

This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.

However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
