Scope and Contents

Annual and quarterly reports concerning young women's Christian associations in Turkey, secretaries' correspondence and reports from Turkey and additional documents concerning association development and program. Reports to the Foreign Division of the YWCA of the U.S.A. describe the political, social and economic conditions in Turkey, association progress and challenges and the needs of the women of Turkey. Advisory secretaries working Turkey write to the Foreign Division to report on their work, discuss and arrange administrative matters, report challenges to their work and request assistance or support. Other documents include reports of work with the USO in Turkey, a letter detailing the relationship between the YWCA of the U.S.A. and the Istanbul Service Center and letters and reports concerning the YWCA in Turkey.

This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.

However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
