Camps, circa 1957-1970
Scope and Contents
Documents concerning camp programs and administration. The YWCA of the U.S.A. and its local associations managed camp programs to give members opportunities to explore outdoor recreation, develop leadership skills and meet other YWCA members. Historical narratives of the camp program in the YWCA of the U.S.A. provide context to the role of camps in the organization. National support for camps varies and the documents concerning the Consultation on Area Camping and the report of the study of the YWCA camping program concern locally managed camp programs and the need for consistent assistance from the National Board of the YWCA of the U.S.A. in supporting the camps and their programs. Special camp projects include an initiative to recruit African American college students as camp counselors and an international camp exchange program. Additional documents include lists of residential YWCA camps, reports from American Camping Association conferences, camp leadership workshop reports and pamphlet, minutes and reports of the YWCA Camping Council of Southern California, minutes of the Timbertall Committee of Management and a bibliography of camp resources for leaders.
