Scope and Contents
Program guides, clippings and public statements concerning the YWCA of the U.S.A.'s education programs and public positions on issues of education including higher education, literacy, sex education and YWCA of the U.S.A. education programs. In response the the Higher Education Act of 1965 the YWCA of the U.S.A. releases a summary and explanation of the act and its implications to student associations suggesting the next steps for the higher education program of the YWCA of the U.S.A. Following this documents are literacy program materials. These program suggestions and guides for leaders include discussion of the literacy problem in the United States and how it affects women in particular, recruitment ideas and suggested resources. The literacy program seek to empower women to be able to better provide for themselves and their family and engage with the world around them. Similarly, work tools, program guides and articles concerning sex education programs include background information and specific program ideas to be implemented by local associations. Additional documents include public statements concerning the education program of the YWCA of the U.S.A. and further resources concerning literacy projects.

This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.
However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
