Scope and Contents

Documents concerning YWCA of the U.S.A. associations in San Diego, California. Governing documents and historical notes provide an overview of the history and structure of the association while visitation reports, correspondence and a program analysis describe and assess the association activities, leadership and performance. Other documents include correspondence and reports concerning the association building and finances and lists of staff and volunteers. The Clay Avenue branch of the San Diego YWCA is established to serve African American women and girls. Correspondence and bylaws discuss the role and definition of branches and centers in the YWCA of the U.S.A. and how the Clay Avenue branch fits into those definitions.

This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.

However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
