New York, circa 1918-1950
Scope and Contents
Documents concerning the history, administration, program and management of the Uptown and West Side branches of the YWCA of the City of New York and its international institute. As a large metropolitan association, the YWCA of the City of New York maintains branches to serve geographic areas or constituent groups. The Uptown Branch is a result of a merger of the Bronx and Harlem branches in 1931. Community and program studies for the West Side Branch address the diverse population and assess how the program meets these diverse needs. The YWCA of the City of New York's international institute provide services to immigrant women and their families. These services include classes in English and job skills, assistance with adjustment and assistance with immigration processes. The administrative history of the branches and their relationship to each other and the YWCA of the City of New York is documented in constitutions, bylaws, association histories and administrative correspondence. Visitation reports summarize and assess evaluative visits by regional and national secretaries. Additional documents include program studies, program reports and advisory correspondence.
