Ohio, circa 1906-1950
Scope and Contents
Documents concerning YWCA of the U.S.A. associations in Steubenville, Tiffin and Toledo, Ohio. The YWCA of Steubenville after some financial and organizational challenges suspends operations around 1930. Later visitation reports and administrative records indicate that the association resumes activities at some point after 1945. In Tiffin, the YWCA began as a part of the District YWCA of Ohio and correspondence indicates an interest in their separating from the district and forming an independently affiliated association. Advisory correspondence and reports with regional and national staff concern the necessary steps in completing this transition. Documents concerning the YWCA of Toledo represent the bulk of the materials. The Toledo association as a charter member of the YWCA of the U.S.A. has a lengthy history of working with its women and girls. The work of the YWCA of Toledo includes an international institute to provide services to its immigrant women and girls. According to correspondence from the institute it seeks separation from the YWCA to pursue its work independently. A report follows describing the details of the proposed arrangement. Additional documents for the YWCA of Toledo include reports of its interracial program and race relations in the association, community studies and completed residence and finance surveys. For all associations, administrative histories can be traced through constitutions, bylaws and historical notes. Visitation reports summarize and assess association programs and leadership while advisory correspondence can provide an insight into the needs and challenges of each association.
