Oregon, circa 1923-1950
Scope and Contents
Documents concerning the YWCA of Portland, Oregon, its branch and the development of a district association for the Portland area. Visitation reports for the YWCA of Portland describe and assess the association's program, leadership, activities, facilities and services. Additional documents include correspondence concerning a proposed cooperative relationship with the YMCA, reports on the development of the Albina area and advisory correspondence with regional and national leaders. The Williams Avenue Branch of the YWCA of Portland is its club for African American women and girls. By 1946 the branch is discontinued and the building is used as a program center. Correspondence and visitation reports concern this transition as well as branch program, leadership and activities. Also included is a report of the "Study of Basic Civil Rights for Negroes," a study conducted in twenty-five associations selected by the National Board of the YWCA of the U.S.A. Development of a district association in the Portland area begins with rural extension work of the YWCA of Portland. Correspondence and reports track the development of work in the area and the progress towards district work.
