Pennsylvania, circa 1906-1950
Scope and Contents
Documents concerning the YWCA of the U.S.A. in Pennsylvania and the history, program and administration of the YWCA of Allentown, Pennsylvania. Documents begin with materials relating to statewide YWCA activities including seminar reports, a summary of the Pennsylvania civil rights law and its implications, YWCA bulletins and a report on transient and homeless people and the services available to them. Following these general documents are minutes and reports of the inter town institutes of Western Pennsylvania YWCA's. These institutes bring together representatives from associations in Western Pennsylvania to share ideas, build leadership skills and discuss issues they have in common. Next, are correspondence and reports regarding the relationship between the YMCA and YWCA in Pennsylvania. The materials are arranged chronologically. Earlier documents concern efforts to work cooperatively and discuss how to address the issue of the YMCA conducting work for women. Later materials concern a cooperative effort to maintain tax-exempt status. The final section of the microdex concerns the YWCA of Allentown. The association's administrative history can be traced through constitutions and bylaws in addition to historical notes and administrative records. Visitation reports assess and describe the association's program, leadership and activities. Additional documents include lists of professional and volunteer leaders, materials for a program planning study, an anniversary program pamphlet and advisory correspondence with regional and local leaders.
