Scope and Contents

Documents concerning the history, administration and program of the YWCA of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Administrative records and correspondence indicate that the association has origins with two women's Christian organizations. Reports and letters concerning a historical study of the association's origins detail the history of the association and the relationship between the two women's groups. Also included is a history of the association in celebration of seventy-five years of work, association fact sheets and constitutions and bylaws. Materials concerning the Carnegie-illinois project document a proposed project where the YWCA or YMCA would take over the programming, title and endowment of the Carnegie libraries of Homestead, Braddock and Duquesne. The YWCA of Pittsburgh studies the financial and program implications and documents include meeting notes, reports and correspondence concerning the proposed program. Additional materials include correspondence concerning association finances, industrial department reports, industrial department visitation reports, an overview of the interracial practices of the association and correspondence concerning interracial practices.

This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.

However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
