Scope and Contents

Documents concerning the branches and centers of the YWCA of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Branches and centers of a metropolitan association like the YWCA of Pittsburgh serve a geographic area or constituency group such as the international institute for immigrant women and their families and the Centre Avenue branch for African American women and girls. The relationship between the central association, the branches and the YWCA of the U.S.A. are established in bylaws and constitutions and are also discussed in reports and correspondence with regional and national leaders. Other materials include program pamphlets, materials concerning the opening of the Business Girls League in the central branch, lists of committee and board members, program reports and advisory correspondence.

This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.

However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
