Scope and Contents

Documents concerning the history, administration and program of the YWCA of Providence, Rhode Island and correspondence concerning the organization of new YWCA work in Westerly, Rhode Island. The administrative history of the YWCA of Providence can be traced through its constitutions and bylaws in addition to association fact sheets and historical notes. Program and activities are described and assessed in visitation reports from field workers and industrial secretary reports summarize the work of the industrial department. Other documents include the report of the Providence Council of Social Agencies' study of social group work in Providence, correspondence regarding relationships with the local YMCA, lists of professional and volunteer leaders, a completed residence survey, anniversary celebration programs and advisory correspondence with regional and national leadership.

This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.

However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
