Scope and Contents

Documents concerning the work of the YWCA of the U.S.A. in West Virginia, the history, program and administration of associations in Bluefield and Charleston, and a report concerning the community of Buckhannon. Documents concerning statewide YWCA work include state visitation reports, conferences and the development of associations throughout the states. For the associations in Bluefield and Charleston, administrative and organizational histories can be traced through their constitutions and bylaws in addition to fact sheets and historical notes. Visitation reports from field secretaries assess program, membership and the overall performance of the associations. Additional documents include correspondence and reports concerning racism in Charleston, lists of staff and volunteer leaders, building and finance records, and advisory correspondence with regional and national leadership.

This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.

However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
