Scope and Contents

Documents concerning the history, affiliation, administration and program of the YWCA of Wheeling, West Virginia. The administrative and organizational history of the association is documented in its constitutions, bylaws, fact sheets and historical notes. In addition, building and finance correspondence and reports provide insight into some of the operational work in the association, including its relationship to the community fund. Visitation reports and industrial department reports are assessments and reports of the association's program, services and overall performance submitted to national leadership. The "Laundry Case" materials are letters, notes and reports documenting the association's involvement in a dispute concerning their patronage of laundries. The event begin when the "labor girls" report that the laundry used by the association have been given a bad review by a national labor organization. The resulting actions, divided opinions and involvement of the community fund are recorded in materials arranged chronologically ending with a timeline of the events. Additional documents concerning the association include lists of staff and volunteer leaders and a community study of Wheeling.

This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.

However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
