Scope and Contents

Documents concerning the YWCA of the U.S.A. and its associations in Alabama including the affiliated associations in Birmingham, Mobile, and Montgomery. Documents are arranged alphabetically by city or town with further form and topic designations on the microfilm for the three affiliated cities. The administration and development of the affiliated associations is documented in basic standards reports, national certification documents, constitutions, and bylaws. Visitation reports include program descriptions, reports of challenges and successes, and discussion of personnel and management need. Additional materials include documents concerning the YWCA of Birmingham's relationship to the YMCA, general correspondence, and reports concerning association program and operations. Correspondence and reports from the other citities include requests for new organizations, requests for Y-Teen clubs, and reports from registered Y-Teen clubs.

This collection is open for use without restriction beyond the standard terms and conditions of Smith College Special Collections.

However, by agreement with the YWCA of the U.S.A., microdexes known to contain financial records or personal health information (usually on job applications) were not digitized and/or not published in our online repository as part of the CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. These microdexes may still be accessed on the original microfilm, and digital files may be made available to individual researchers upon request.
