Until we move into New Neilson in early 2021, collections are stored in multiple locations and may take up to 48 hours to retrieve. To the extent that she owns copyright, Sylvia Porter retained copyright in her works donated to Smith College. Copyright in other items in this collection may be held by their respective creators. For reproductions of materials that are governed by fair use as defined under U. S. Copyright Law, no permission to cite or publish is required. For those few instances beyond fair use, or which may regard materials in the collection not created by Porter, researchers are responsible for determining who may hold materials' copyrights and obtaining approval from them. Researchers do not need anything further from Smith College Special Collections to move forward with their use.

Biographical Note

Sylvia Field Porter was born in Patchogne, Long Island, New York on June 18, 1913. She received a B.A. from Hunter College in 1932, attended graduate school in business administration at New York University, and received numerous honorary degrees. Porter edited a weekly newsletter,"Reporting on Governments," devoted to U.S. government finance and, beginning in 1935, she edited and wrote a financial column for the New York Post. She later wrote a syndicated daily column. She won several journalism awards. Porter also wrote How to Make Money in Government Bonds (1939); I War Comes to the American Home (1941); and Sylvia Porter's Annual Income Tax Guide; and co-wrote How to Live Within Your Income (1948) and Mananging Your Money (1953, rev. 1961).
