Scope and Contents

The Voters for Choice records contain correspondence; photographs related to the pro-choice movement, fundraising, political activism; public relations materials; press releases; reports; conference materials; financial information; miscellaneous printed material; video and audio tapes of campaign ads, radio spots, interviews, debates, etc.. Also included are records of the Board of Directors pertaining to the organization's purpose (the preservation of a woman's right to choose), by way of media campaigns and endorsing pro-choice candidates for political office. There is also a small amount of personal material generated by Kristina Kiehl.

Conditions Governing Access

Open with caveat: collection has not been fully processed and therefore may be difficult to use. Video and audio tapes need research copies made before they can be used used. Collection is stored offsite; researchers must give 48 hours advance notice.

Until we move into New Neilson in early 2021, collections are stored in multiple locations and may take up to 48 hours to retrieve. Researchers are strongly encouraged to contact Special Collections ( at least a week in advance of any planned visits so that boxes may be retrieved for them in a timely manner.

The Sophia Smith Collection owns copyright to the unpublished works by the creator of this collection. Copyright to materials created by others may be owned by those individuals or their heirs or assigns. Permission must be obtained to publish reproductions or quotations beyond "fair use." It is the responsibility of the researcher to identify and satisfy the holders of all copyrights.

Biographical / Historical

Co-founded in 1979 by Gloria Steinem and Kristina Kiehl, Voters for Choice is the nation's largest independent non-partisan action committee. It is committed to maintaining safe, legal and accessible abortion services for all women, regardless of geographical location, age or economic status. Based in Washington, D.C., it's main agenda is to elect candidates who support a woman's right to make decisions regarding abortion, contraception, and child-bearing without government interference.

Abortion rights advocacy group. Records contain correspondence, photographs, fundraieing and public relations materials, reports, conference materials, printed materials, and audiovisual materials. Records document the organization's mission to preserve abortion rights by way of media campaigns and endorsing pro-choice candidates for political office.
