Biographical / Historical

Marylin Sloan Bender was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 25, 1925. She entered Smith College at 15 and graduated in 1944 with a bachelors in history. She then went on to Columbia Law School, graduating in 1947.

Bender worked as a reporter for the New York Journal American, 1951-58, and was a reporter, editor, and freelancer at the New York Times from 1959-78 and 1985-92. From 1976-77, she was editor of the NYT Business and Finance section, and from 1985-91, she edited Business World. She wrote several books, including The Beautiful People (1967), At the Top (1975), The Chosen Instrument (with S. Altschul, 1982), Nouveau is Better Than No Riche At All (with Monsieur Marc, 1983). She married Selig Altschul in 1959 and had a son, James Sloan, in 1960. She died at 95 years old at her home in Manhattan, New York on October 19, 2020.
