Scope and Contents
The collection contains correspondence from many of the authors the Bookshop sponsored in its lecture series and friends of the store including Martha Gilbert Bianchi, Grace Coolidge, Elizabeth A. Drew, Dorothy Canfield Fisher, Alfred A. Knopf, Christopher Morley, Elizabeth Morrow and Hugh Walpole. There are photographs of the store and the authors, ephemera, book and gift catalogs and a file of The Book Scorpion, a publication that it issued eriodically. There are scrapbooks containing newspaper and magazine clippings about the store and its advertisements. Also a file of magazine articles on the store. There is a bound manuscript entitled "After ten years : stray pages of recollections, compiled by the present staff of the Hampshire Bookshop, " Northampton, Mass., 1926.

Biographical / Historical
The Hampshire Bookshop was founded and operated by Marion Dodd, Smith College Class of 1906 (1882-1961) and Mary Byers Smith, Smith College Class of 1908 (1885-1983) in Northampton, Mass. It served the Northampton community and Smith College as bookstore and publisher and issued over 40 titles, local natural histories, keepsakes and pamphlets. In addition, it brought to Northampton over 100 writers of national and international repute during its operations including Bennett Cerf, G. K. Chesterton, Padraic Colum, Dorothy Canfield Fisher, Robert Frost, Amy Lowell, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Christopher Morley, Vita Sackville-West, Carl Sandburg, Hugh Walpole and William Butler Yeats.
