Dean of Faculty Area, 1875 - 2016

 Series
Identifier: 1

Scope and Contents

The Dean of Faculty Area series contains files related to the administration of those departments and academic programs under the jurisdiction of the Dean of the Faculty. The Dean of the Faculty is one of the budget officers of the College and takes final responsibility for the faculty salary pool, as well as departmental and academic support budgets. The Dean administers the staffing of academic departments, and makes decisions regarding reductions and reallocations of faculty appointments. Academic departments and programs which the Dean oversees have, at various times, included: the Athletics department, the Center for Academic Development, the Center for Foreign Languages and Culture, the Clark Science Center, the Center for Academic Computing, the Office of Communications Systems, the School for Social Work, and the Campus School. Departments and offices under Dean of Faculty jurisdiction have varied considerably since its establishment in 1978.

These files include departmental reports, memoranda, correspondence, budget and staffing forms and reports, and various lists. Some departments and administrative offices that have not always been under the jurisdiction of the Dean of the Faculty are filed in the General/Subjects series rather than Dean of Faculty Area. These include the Library, the Archives, and the Graduate Studies office.
