Scope and Contents

The material in the Office of Inclusion and Equity records includes memory booklets, orientation program booklets, training program material, and a report titled "Affirmative Action" by Shelton Burden. These records include materials related to the Bridge program. Founded in 1970 as a way to support the recruitment and retention of African American students at Smith, the Bridge program has expanded over the years to welcome all students of color who are interested in establishing cross-cultural friendships, while also becoming part of the larger Smith community.

Conditions Governing Access

Materials in the Smith College Archives are open for use, with the following exceptions: "Office Files," files of records created for the use of the administrative unit that created them, are closed to research for a period of 10 years following their creation. Box 2 of these records is closed. Student academic records, student disciplinary records, and all records containing FERPA-covered student information are closed during the lifetime of the student. Student records created 100 years or more ago are assumed to be about deceased students.

Conditions Governing Access

Until we move into New Neilson in early 2021, collections are stored in multiple locations and may take up to 48 hours to retrieve. Researchers are strongly encouraged to contact Special Collections (specialcollections@smith.edu) at least a week in advance of any planned visits so that boxes may be retrieved for them in a timely manner.

Materials in this collection may be governed by copyright. For reproductions of materials that are governed by fair use as defined under U. S. Copyright Law, no permission to cite or publish is required. Researchers are responsible for determining who may hold materials' copyrights and obtaining approval from them. Researchers do not need anything further from Smith College Special Collections to move forward with their use.

Biographical / Historical

The Office of Equity and Inclusion supports the college’s belief that diversity in all aspects of the educational environment is necessary for achieving the highest level of academic excellence. The Office was created in early 2000 and was called "The Office of Institional Diversity". In 2018, the title 'The Office of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity' was being used. It is now titled The Office of Equity and Inclusion.
