Conditions Governing Access

The collection is open to researchers according to the regulations of the College Archives with the following exceptions: Any material relating to grades or personal information of students is closed to researchers. This collection must be screened by an archivist for student records before being used by researchers. Please contact the archives a minimum of two weeks in advance of your visit for access.

Until we move into New Neilson in early 2021, collections are stored in multiple locations and may take up to 48 hours to retrieve. Researchers are strongly encouraged to contact Special Collections (specialcollections@smith.edu) at least a week in advance of any planned visits so that boxes may be retrieved for them in a timely manner.

Smith College retains copyright of materials created as part of its business operations; however, copyright in other items in this collection may be held by their respective creators. For reproductions of materials that are governed by fair use as defined under U. S. Copyright Law, no permission to cite or publish is required. For instances which may regard materials in the collection not created by Smith College, researchers are responsible for determining who may hold materials' copyrights and obtaining approval from them. Researchers do not need anything further from Smith College Special Collections to move forward with their use.

Biographical / Historical

The Office for International Study promotes study abroad opportunities that are in keeping with the educational aims of the college. The office was created in 1925. Among the programs offered are those in Paris (since 1925), Florence (since 1931), Geneva (since 1946) and Hamburg (since 1961). Previously, there were also programs for Spain (1930-1991) and Mexico (1937-1952).The office is also called "Junior Year Abroad" or "Study Abroad".

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Materials were transferred to College Archives in years 2007, 2012 and 2017. Accession 12A-032 was transferred from the German Department, January 2013.
