Conditions Governing Access

This collection is open for research with the following restrictions on access:

"Office Files," files of records created for the use of the administrative unit that created them, are closed to research for a period of 10 years following their creation.

Student academic records, student disciplinary records, and all records containing FERPA-covered student information are closed during the lifetime of the student. Student records created 100 years or more ago are assumed to be about deceased students.

Board of Counselors records are permanently closed.

Some files in the collection are indicated as closed for 75 years due to personally identifiable information.

Conditions Governing Use

Smith College retains copyright of materials created as part of its business operations; however, copyright in other items in this collection may be held by their respective creators. For reproductions of materials that are governed by fair use as defined under U. S. Copyright Law, no permission to cite or publish is required. For instances which may regard materials in the collection not created by Smith College, researchers are responsible for determining who may hold materials' copyrights and obtaining approval from them. Researchers do not need anything further from Smith College Special Collections to move forward with their use.

Biographical / Historical

The Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, formerly the Office of the Chaplains, is an inter-religious, non-denominational body which "promotes spiritual flourishing for all religious and non-religious students, focusing on ethical reflection, social justice, mindfulness and contemplative practice as well as resources grounded in different faith traditions. The Center strives to raise religious literacy and promote interfaith engagement toward a more inclusive, just and engaged citizenry."

Abstract

The Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, formerly the Office of the Chaplains, is an inter-religious, non-denominational body which "promotes spiritual flourishing for all religious and non-religious students, focusing on ethical reflection, social justice, mindfulness and contemplative practice as well as resources grounded in different faith traditions." These records include planning and other materials on events, including Otelia Cromwell Day, correspondence, flyers and brochures, budgets, sermons, photographs, and DVDs. Subjects of events and other materials include campus religious activities, same sex marriage, gender, 9/11 and terrorism, Hurricane Katrina relief and Iraq War teach-in.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Center for Religious and Spiritual Life records were transfered from the office to the College Archives in various segments over time.

Appraisal

2 boxes (2.166 linear feet) of personnel records, student records, and routine financial and event planning records (1977-2002) were destroyed in compliance with the Smith College Records Management Policy in March 2023.

Processing Information

Between September 2022 and February 2023, Smith College Special Collections renumbered many boxes to eliminate duplicate numbers within collections in order to improve researcher experience. A full crosswalk of old to new numbers is available.
