Biographical / Historical

Sandra Blutman Millikin is a member of the Smith College Class of 1965. Raised in Riverside, California, her mother was an elementary school teacher and her father was a physicist. While at Smith, she lived in Dewey House and majored in art history, with a concentration in architectural history. She was intellectually influenced by Peter Collins, a visiting professor from McGill University. Between her junior and senior years at Smith, Sandra traveled to England on a Smith tour organized by an alumna, Patricia Milne Henderson, Class of 1960. Her tour of England convinced her to return to England after graduating from college. She studied at the Courtauld Insitute in London, receiving her degree in 1967. She soon found employment with the Encyclopedia Britannica and later worked for the drawings collection at the Royal Institute of British Architects. She married David Millikin and resided with him in the village of Uffington in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom for many years. Millikin went on to study law and became qualified as a solicitor in 1979. Recently, she has returned to the field of architectural history and has been lecturing about architectural history on cruise ships across the world since 2006.
