Scope and Contents

This collection contains both material related to Mary Murray Hopkins’ student life, including correspondence and a photo albums from her time at Smith, and papers related to her work as an associate professor, including photographs of her teaching, professional correspondence, a journal, and a notebook of scientific observations of Saturn. The collection also contains news articles and correspondence related to Hopkins’ death in 1921.

Biographical / Historical

Mary Murray Hopkins, who taught astronomy at Smith College from 1916 to 1921, received her BA from Smith in 1898. Hopkins earned her MA from Smith in 1912, and spent two summers working at the Yerkes Observatory at the University of Chicago. She spent 1914-1915 at Columbia University on a Smith College travelling fellowship, and earned her Ph.D. from Columbia in 1915. She died on May 18, 1921.
