Biographical / Historical

Ida Deck Haigh was a concert pianist and a associate professor of music a Smith College. She received her early training in music at West Virginia Wesleyan College and Columbia University and went on to professional training at the Institute of Musical Art and the Julliard Graduate School of Music. Haigh taught music at Cornell University where her husband, Andrew C. Haigh was a professor of music. They often played concert venues together as a piano duet. Haigh came to Smith in 1941 where she taught music theory as well as teaching piano to individual students. She died in Northampton in 1985 and was memorialized in a concert on the Smith campus where numerous former students performed and spoke of Haigh's devotion and talent.
