Biographical / Historical
Marilyn R. Schuster is a Andrew W. Mellon Professor Emerita in the Humanities at Smith College. Schuster graduated from Mills College in 1965 with a degree in French and later completed her master of philosophy and doctorate in French language and literature from Yale University. She was a professor of French studies and comparative literature from 1971 to 1999 at Smith before becoming a professor in the program for the study of women and gender in 1999 until her retirement in 2015. Schuster was also the provost and dean of faculty from 2009 to 2014. Schuster's research and teaching focused on 20th and 21st century women's literature and feminist and queer theory. She aimed to create a more diverse liberal arts curriculum for female students and students of color. She published A Queer Love Story: The Letters of Jane Rule and Rick Bébout in 2017 and has been serving on the Mills College board of trustees in Oakland, California since her retirement.
