Biographical / Historical

The Center for Innovative Practice and Social Work Education was started in 1999 to generate and disseminate new practice knowledge, initially to influence professional education and ultimately to impact social policy and service delivery.

One of the department's initiatives, the End-of-Life Care Program, was begun in 2000 and guided Fellows toward a post masters clinical social work certificate in end-of-life care practice. Another initiative, the Clinicians of Color Study, explored what motivated persons of color to enter clinical social work practice and to select SCSSW in particular, and what ways the program could attract more persons of color to the field.

Collaboration for Community-Focused Family-Based Practice explored the impact of managed care on family-based practice. Partners for Success Program provided a wide range of mental health and support services to children K-Grade 5 at targeted schools in Springfield, Massachusetts.

For many years, the Center provided leadership in clinical social work practice and opportunities for research through these and other programs.

Abstract

The Center for Innovative Practice and Social Work Education was started in 1999 to generate and disseminate new practice knowledge, initially to influence professional education and ultimately to impact social policy and service delivery. Its records consist primarily of End-of-Life Care program material as well as that of Partners for Success and Clinicians of Color. Material types include partnership and foundation files, program financials, evaluation reports, and case studies.

Arrangement

This collection consists of two "accessions" which have been arranged into two series. An accession is a group of material that was received by the archives around the same time from the same donor. Material has not been moved since its receipt, so various groupings of program files remain in their original order.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Transferred to College Archives by the School for Social Work, Diane Tsoulas, Associate Dean for Administration, 2007. A second transfer was made by the School for Social Work, 2012.

Related Materials

A major portion of the work done within the Center for Innovative Practice was tied to positioning students in the field, so related material can be found in the School for Social Work, Office of Field Education records (CA-MS-01209). Student, and teacher, evaluations based on fieldwork are also a part of this collection. The School for Social Work, Office of the Registrar records (CA-MS-01211) would give a larger picture of how this work fits into students' academic development. The School for Social Work, Office of the Dean records (CA-MS-01210) contains a few files attributed to the Center as well.

Processing Information

In 2021, Madison White, the processing archivist, started to split the Smith College School of Social Work records into several smaller collections based on the offices or departments which had donated the materials. This collection was created as a result.
