Scope and Contents

The collection contains materials describing the activities of Samantha Lyon including materials from courses and extracurricular activities. Specific material pertaining the founding of Smith College's Bicycle Kitchen and its incorporation with the Student Government Association as well as materials related to Ms. Lyon's "Documenting Oral Histories: Activism at Smith" research thesis. Types of materials include photographs, oral histories, electronic records, invitations, newspaper clippings, programs, letters, and video recordings.

Biographical / Historical

Samantha L. Lyon was a member of the Smith College Class of 2008. As a Smith undergraduate, Lyon was committed to promoting bicycles as an environmentally responsible form of transportation and as an enjoyable pastime on campus. Along with fellow activists on campus she started a group called the “Bicycle Kitchen,” which invites other bike lovers and riders to learn about bikes, safety, maintenance and benefits.

Samantha L. Lyon, Smith College Class of 2008, was a campus activist and a co-founder of the college Bicycle Kitchen. The collection consists of artifacts, audiovisual materials, class notebooks, exams, and papers from courses taken by Samantha Lyon, correspondence, as well as materials documenting her role in founding the Bicycle Kitchen and other activism.
