Abstract

Helen Alling Davis had a long career in the YWCA, serving in many capacitites and traveling to establish the organization in Asia. This collection includes a transcript of Around the World in Nine Months: Letters from Helen Alling Davis, which documents Davis's trip in 1920-1921, traveling through China, Japan and Korea. She spent much of her time in the Philippines where she was working to establish the YWCA there.

Abstract

Teacher and Peace Corps volunteer. The Sommer Papers consist primarily of letters to her family written during her service for the Peace Corps as a teacher in the Philippines. The letters also document her training in Hawaii and at Northern Illinois University. Included are reports to the Peace Corps, correspondence to and from others about her work, and itineraries of her travels in Asia during and after her Peace Corps duty.

Scope and Contents The YWCA of the Philippines is formed in 1926 under the aid of the YWCA of the U.S.A. to provide activities concerning the social, intellectual, spiritual and physical well-being of women and girls. Health education and physical fitness programs are offered at the YWCA center in addition to training programs such as one held at the Philippine Normal School. Abstract

Since 1925, the Office for International Study has promoted study abroad opportunities that are in keeping with the educational aims of the college. Smith College Junior Year for International Studies records consist of correspondence, meeting notes, and photos pertaning to programs in Hamburg and Paris, as well as general office files.
